Summary

SAFE-Pack aims at the development of production machines for a new generation of functionalised packing material for food, focusing on the reduction of microbial contamination, the most critical problem directly affecting the biological and microbial quality and safety of food in storage and distribution. As a consequence, SAFE-Pack technology will lead to improvements not only ensuring food quality, but also reducing the spoilage and waste of foodstuff lowering operational costs and consequently making the technology safer and more affordable to all and even most modest Mediterranean and African communities.

 

This project combines well established production technology of polymer foils for food with the novel and chemical additive-free technique of photocatalysis for the avoidance of the spread of microbiological contamination in packed food. Photocatalysis, is widely known and proved, but novel as in-situ in food packaging material.

 

Objectives

1)    development of machines and processes for in-line nano-coating of multi-layer polymer foils

2)    Proof of extension of the shelf life of packed foodstuff with such technology

3)    Adaptation of atmospheric plasma coating for in-line process

  • Novel production machines for in-line nano-coating for prevention of bio-fouling on foils

  • low activation energies ensure a low energy consumption of the system
  • use of a non-toxic catalyst instead of chemical agents
