Mass spectrometry is the gold standard in the field of quantitative compound identification. With this technique each compound generates a unique mass spectrum in which individual peaks can be directly related to the compound structure or mass. This compares with other techniques such as Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) or Field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS) that identify chemicals according to their characteristic “fingerprint”.
